A member asked:

If someone is diagnosed with hypertension and sleep apnea, do you treat the apnea first to see if it lowers the bp or do you treat both at the same time? what first line bp med would you use (if blood tests are normal)?

High blood pressure is dangerous because it can result in strokes, damage to the blood vessels, etc. It should always be treated even while the causes are being sought and sorted. BP meds can always be tapered down if the underlying condition is resolving. ACE inhibitors or Angiotensin II receptor antagonists are the first line medications for lowering BP to below 130/80.
