It depends on what the injury is. Crutches/ Boots are typically prescribed for fractures or severe muscle/ligament tears. If you have a fracture or a torn ligament, you will need to use a boot/crutches to prevent the bone/ligament from moving out of alignment. Putting pressure on the foot in these injuries without support can cause improper healing and lead to lasting pain/ dysfunction.

It is very basic. If you cannot bear weight on an extremity use crutches for your own safety. Get proper instruction on there use.
