A burp is just stomach gas making its way up the esophagus and out of your mouth. In order to do this, the ingested air has to pass both the lower and upper esophageal sphincters. There are times when the air passes the lower esophageal sphincter (which connects the stomach to the esophagus) but does not have enough force to pass out of the upper esophageal sphincter. This can seem an inward burp.
