Platelets are the short living (hours to days) blood elements that plug leaks in blood vessels caused by incidental trauma and assist in clot formation when activated by other factors. The elevated number cited by itself does not lead to excess clot formation.

Elevated platelets , greater than 400000 is defined as thrombocytosis. Can cause clotting and at times people are treated at times with aspirin.
