There is more than one form of diabetes. In one, most common in childhood, an immune system reaction kills off insulin production so it must be injected, or the kid dies. The more common adult form mostly effects overweight people. With present technology there is no cure, but treatment now is much better than a death within months for the kids, and bad complications for adults.

Type 1 must be treated with insulin as pancreas does not make any for a number of reasons. Can also be cured with pancreatic transplant. Type 2 is best treated first with diet till BMI gets to less than 25 and/or a number of meds now that work very well. Many can "cure" it with diet. Favorite quote: A disease that can be treated by diet alone should not be treated anyother way.
