A member asked:

Had severe chest pain that sent me to er. cardio ruled out as cause. follow-up visit with gastro doc suggests it may have been acid reflux. what can i do if this happens again to reduce the pain/discomfort at home so i don't have to go to er?

Having your primary care doc involved would be best. Most offices have after hours answering services. Reflux is not likely to cause severe sudden chest pain, rather an esophageal spasm if pain is related to your gastrointestinal tract.

It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a doctor who can evaluate the reflux or esophageal spasm. If you are overweight, losing weight is imperative. Wish you good health!
