Costochondritis: The most common cause of chest pain in this age group is what is called costochondritis which is pain coming from the bones and muscles of the chest. It resolves on its own most of the time. The treatment would be pain medications like tylenol (acetaminophen) and motrin.

R/O PLEURITIS : PLEURITIS=inflammation of the lining of the lung and Pericarditis = inflammation of the lining of the heart can both cause referred shoulder pain. If labs X-ray and EKG are normal a course of prednisone may be needed. Please seek prompt medical attention for diagnosis and treatment options. Also if there have been several bouts an autoimmune screen for lupus and RA is needed. Also check coxackie
