A member asked:

If you have bright red blood occasionally in your stool (not ever in wiping) could it still be a type of cancer? consistently and frequency of stool always varies it seems. i am 27. occasional pain in center left of abdomen (hip) unknown if related?

We are taught to never say never, but bright red blood in the stool at any age originates from near the outlet. The origin is most likely to be a scratch/tear in the outlet from bulky/hard or rapidly exiting poop. Leaking blood from a cancer would be darker & originate from higher in the digestive tract. Discuss your concerns with your doc.

Agree with Dr. Ferguson. You are vey unlikely to have cancer. However, blood loss from hemorrhoids can cause anemia. It would be prudent to see your doctor. To prevent constipation: You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Wish you good health!
