Cold air going in thru your mouth to your throat irritates it while going thru your nose is warmed thru the passage and is less irritating. Once your cold gets better you will be fine.

Your trachea ( windpipe) is inflamed/ irritated either from harsh coughing or from the virus which caused your head cold. A harsh dry cough will be triggered by a deep breath, laughing or even talking until the trachea heals. There will be no phlegm. If you're bothered by dry, hacking cough, take a cough suppressant like robutussinDM.
