A member asked:

At a first periodontal exam the dentist decides if a deep scaling and root planing is needed. can a hygienist easily do this even when deep millimeter pockets of 5 to 7 millimeters? is it unusual for a dentist to do this work in most offices?

A deep cleaning can be done by either a dentist or hygienist with 5 to 7 mm pockets. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the bacteria and calculus on the tooth and in the pocket. Most dental offices do this routinely but some will refer to a periodontist instead.

A hygienist is trained to perform deep cleanings, and a general dentist also. If the dentist and or the hygienist feels that the patient needs to be referred to a periodontist for further treatment such as periodontal surgery, than this referral will be discussed.
