A member asked:

Is there anyone who can tell me the difference among perio maintenance cleaning; deep cleaning; planing & scaling? does an hygienist do each of these?

New versus Continued: Perio maintenance is a visit to check on the results of an on-going treatment. Scaling and root planing is the treatment where the hygienist or dentist attempts to remove the bacteria in the gum pocket. Research shows that all of the bacteria present at the start of s&rp remain at the end. They just need a chance to regrow unless you have a method like perio protect that kills the bacteria.

Yes, a hygienist: "deep cleaning" is the common term for the dental proceedure known as "scaling and root planing". This is necessary when hard deposits, or tartar, forms on the root surfaces of teeth. If not removed these deposits can cause gingival inflamation and bone loss. Perio maintenance describes the type of follow-up cleaning done after a patient has undergone scaling and root planing.
