A member asked:

I am a geriatric and have wondered over the years why my multiple general and specialty dentists, nor hygienists, have never once mentioned about value of using a tongue scraper when brushing. is it due to studies showing that it is valueless?

The reason is that a tongue scraper is easy to misuse and cause trauma to the tongue and taste buds. Proper hydration and a stiff bristle brush will do a good enough job to clean the tongue.

Your oral condition and hygiene was good and no food residue was collected on your tongue. Scraping is recommended for food particles remaining on tongue, bad breath, discoloration from medications and better taste buds sensation. It is not useless but optional to use.
