A member asked:

A 80 year old man had a fall and broke his neck, injuring his cervical spinal cord. immediately after the fall he walked 25 metres. because he could walk was his cervical spinal cord injury not a life-threatening injury before he walked?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Achieving an upright posture and walking that distance after the injury implies that the cord was not affected to a significant degree prior to the walk. However, slippage of bone fragments during or after the walk could cause significant cord damage. Application of a stabilizing collar around the neck is standard preventive care after accidents until the cervical spine can be assessed.
