Low red blood cell count or anemia does not cause bone marrow cancer or leukemia but anemia is almost always present in bone marrow cancer or leukemia.

Low RBC may be a feature of bone marrow hypo function or decreased production in cancers and leukemias that are caused by different other causes, most times unknown or hard to determine.
