Testing for post voiding residual volume of urine by pre & post voiding ultrasound looks for significant retention of urine. (over 200 cc's) is seen in urinary bladder outflow obstructions or neuromuscular disorders of the bladder. Another method is bladder catheterization performed to measure how much urine is retained after urinating..

The test is called post void residual. It is done by ultrasound after you void on a full bladder to see what was the total in bladder and how much was left after you voided. It mainly gives an idea about any obstruction to flow e.g. by the prostate and the contractile capacity of the bladder of the bladder.
