Indefinitely or for as long as needed and no significant side effects develop that will prompt adjustments in meds. Many times following treatment for hyperthyroidism, such as surgery for example, many patients become hypothyroid needing lifelong replacement.

I will assume that you have Grave’s disease.If that is the case and you have been taking methimazole for a year or more and your thyroid hormones levels are normal the medication could be discontinued and observe if you have entered in a remission.If you become hyperthyroid again I would advise radioactive iodine treatment.
