Is hida scan useless? i have gallbladder symptoms. hida ef 11%, ct and us normal. surgeon will remove gallbladder though not encouraging that it will help symptoms, despite hida result. does hida result mean anything at all? thanks?

Yes it is low. If you followed all preparations recommended to do before the HIDA a&nd it was done right then it is low and the cause of it could be gall bladder disease. Your surgeon is being very honest mentioning that surgery may not help symptoms as they can be caused by many other problems depending on your exact symptoms. Ask how many times he is certain that it is GB does it not help.

Yes, the surgeon is correct. There are features that are consistent with your gallbladder being the culprit for the pain and nausea, but other reasons that can contribute or cause pain cannot be ruled out. Your primary care doc along with your surgeon remain best to further clarify. The EF on HIDA is a functional test, it does reflect a slow/“lazy” gallbladder, but does not link it to symptoms.
