Upper endoscopies are good studies to evaluate dysphagia (painful swallowing) and rules out disorders such as strictures, rings/webs, cancer, polyps, ulcers, etc. However, it does not evaluate for motility. Omeprazole is a great anti-acid reflux medication. Sternal discomfort can also arise from musculoskeletal, pulmonary, and cardiac causes. Please consult a GP for continued work-up.

Your symptoms are more consistent with reflux esophagitis than just a mild gastritis but EGD did not show this problem which surprises me. I think you should visit your GI doctor again. In the mean time, you should increase dose of Omeprazole to 40 mg, a day for 2 months and start anti-reflux measures (no flat supine within 2 hrs of meal, raise the head of your bed with 2 brick blocks).
