The 2 conditions cannot be fully discriminated on urinary symptoms only as they can cause very similar urinary symptoms. Prostate cancer may cause distant symptoms, such as bone pain and/or weight loss in advanced stages which BPH would not cause.

There can be significant overlap between urinary symptoms/signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia (PBH) and prostate cancer including change in urination pattern (i.e. decreased urinary stream, delay in starting urination, discomfort/burning with urination intermittent blood in urine and urinary blockage). Please discuss such changes to your primary care physician to check PSA, rectal exam and UA.
