A typical scenario is that the thrombosis develops in the leg veins over a period of few days(may take up to 1-2 weeks). Once it attains a certain size the friable thrombus can detach from the vein and travel up in the larger veins as an embolus and land in the lungs. The travel time from the leg veins to the pulmonary veins is variable but short , estimate 1-2 days.
