Costochondritis is and inflammation between the ribs and your breastbone. When this occurs it is very difficult for it to completely resolve. Hot soaks, use of over-the-counter diclofenac gel can also be helpful along with giving it time which can be as long as 6-8 weeks.

Think of costochondritis as damage to the junction of the ribs and the cartilage connection to the sternum. When other cartilage/bone areas of the body are damaged, splinting is used for healing but this is not done for costochondritis. Therefore, the best treatment is to avoid unnecessary exercise or activities that make the symptoms worse until there is improvement in symptoms.
