A member asked:

My mom has been constipated over a week now. she usually has hard stools but one day, she had loose stools & she saw a tiny spot of blood on her stool. could it still be hemorrhoids from constipation if she saw the blood the day she had a loose stool?

It could. But it is still best for her to see her MD for her symptoms and to check for the reason for blood.

Yes, hemorrhoids can bleed independent of the consistency of the stool, other causes of bleeding cannot be ruled out. The presence of constipation initially followed by loose stools is suggestive of hemorrhoidal bleed.

For constipation she may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948 Wish you good health!
