That's an unusually high WBC for a virus, more worrisome for a bacterial infection. Either way, it should return to normal as the infection clears (i.e. anywhere from about 4,500 to 10,000), but it can take quite a while. Check back with the doctor treating you. Good luck.

Following an infection your white blood cells should return to normal in 1-2 weeks. Of note, specific meds such as steroids are used sometimes in infections to help with symptoms and can cause a significant elevation in white blood cells. Your doc remains your best reference in timing repeat blood counts to assure resolution.
