When infected with HIV the virus (antigen) will begin to replicate. Because of factors such as how much virus was received initially and the person's immune reaction, the time it takes for the virus to be detected can be quite variable. Development of antibodies to the virus will follow a similar period. Once detectable both the antigen AND antibody tests will remain positive until treated.
