A member asked:

I am truly confused by pcp, the internet & doctors on here. hiv is a complex & complicated disease but as far as symptoms related to it, window period & conclusiveness after a test nobody really knows.i hear 6wks, 3mths, 6mths, 9nths, 1yr. what is it?

A negative HIV nucleic acid test at 6 months after exposure would be conclusive of lack of infection from that exposure. A positive result is conclusive any time after exposure.

I am not sure I understand your question, I think what you are asking is how long could the window period be? Symptomatically it could show up within weeks of infection as acute HIV that could be like flu like symptoms which was previously not easily picked up until years later when there is very low immunity. The tests have been updated to be able to pick it by two weeks so you may be on old info
