A member asked:

Is it normal for bleeding to occur during a teeth scaling/cleaning procedure? also my dentist suggests to do it every 10 days for six sessions for my gingivitis, but i read online that it has to be done only once in six months?

Bleeding is to be expected when there is gingivitis. Cleaning every 6 months is for people with healthy teeth and gums; more frequent sessions may be necessary with gingivitis. Follow your dentist's advice -- or ask the dentist directly in order to understand better.

If you have gum disease expect bleeding because your gums are inflamed and have bacteria present. Even if your gums are healthy some bleeding will occur. If your treatment responds well and you practice good oral hygiene than you need only go every three months. I have my teeth cleaned every three months.

Bleeding indicates thatnyou have a more serious problem, periodontitis, rather than gingivitis. More frequent scaling may be beneficial, but treating gum disease is not my specialty. Rather than seeking a 5 minute Google search second opinion, it would probably be better to consult with a gum/bone specialist, a Periodontist, who has more than 15,000 hours of training..
