A member asked:

I have a carpal boss on my left hand and i'm wondering why the area around the bump is so sensitive and painful to touch? does that mean a tendon or any other ligament is 'damaged' too? what could the 'damage' be and how would it be fixed?

Truthfully any answer would only be a guess in this instance. To determine what is actually going on would require an evaluation and likely an X-ray. The bump is either bone or a ganglion cyst.

If you have been diagnosed w/ carpal boss at the back (dorsum) of your hand, then you have hypertrophy of the base of 1 of your metacarpals (usu the 2nd) & this results in marrow edema & pain at the junction of the carpal bone. Additionally, you may develop soft tissue edema, bursitis, and extensor tendon problems. MRI is helpful to diagnose carpe bossu syndrome and is treatable by a hand surgeon
