A carpal boss is often formed by underlying arthritis at a carpometacarpal joint. That alone can cause pain and sensitivity. They can also irritate the adjacent extensor tendons causing pain & snapping of the tendons. Best to have your hand evaluated by a hand surgeon to get a definitive answer.

My carpal boss is pretty painful, but so is the area around the bony lump. It's very sensitive especially to touch. What could that possibily mean? Might there be any tissue or ligaments or tendons around the bump damaged too? I'm having an MRI soon?
