A member asked:

I have a carpal boss. i had a surgeon's appointment today and he told me that the surgery is a risk option. what other treatments are available to get rid of it? is there a chance that i also damaged a ligament in my hand?(it occured after an injury?

I trust that the surgeon you're consulting is a hand surgeon. Since a carpal boss is a bony overgrowth the only treatment I can think of would be either surgery or corticosteroid injections. Do you have significant symptoms to suggest tendon involvement? A hand surgeon can advise you best but surgery may not be completely curative.

The boss usually occurs at the insertion of the extensor carpi radialis and is associated with inflammation at that level with production of some hypertrophic bone. It is rarely a painful condition and does not warrant surgery unless boney degeneration occurs. Boss not associated with ligament injury but doesn't rule out an injury elsewhere in the wrist
