I was diagnosed with a small hernia at maximum effort (that's how the doctor described it), and was told that i can keep going to the gym(weights). i went a few times since, but after reading today about training with hernia i'm not sure it's smart?

What kind of hernia you are referring to, ventral hernia or groin hernia (femoral vs inguinal) Your doctor may be right. Exercise can prevent hernia and exercise is not absolutely contraindicated for people with mild hernia. However, if the hernia gets worse with exercise by time, it should be repaired.
