If it is brown it is most likely a carious lesion, and that would require a filling to prevent further damage. If you go for exams and cleaning every six months these issues can usually be prevented. If you don't see a dentist regularly these problems can go undetected.

BROWN OR BLACK IS THE COLOR OF DEMINERALIZATION. A DIET LOW IN SUGAR AND ACIDIC FOODS WILL KEEP ALL YOUR TEETH FROM FURTHER DECAY. BRUSH WITH TOOTHPASTE THAT HAS FLUORIDE AND ANTI CAVITY INGREDIENTS. YOUR DENTIST WILL WATCH YOUR TOOTH ON FOLLOWUP VISITS.

Early lesions usually dull white. As damage progresses lesion darkens. Sounds like you may need a filling. Ask your Dentist to take another look.
