A member asked:

Can your d-dimer level be up if you are on your menstrual cycle with heavy bleeding? i had my ddimer check at urgent care and it was 855 cut off is 500ng/ml . i went to the er and had a ct and ultrasound that was clear. should i be concerned?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

I don't think a significantly elevated d dimer test should be attributed to normal menstrual bleeding but I'm unsure whether extremely heavy menstrual bleeding can cause it. Nevertheless it was best to check it out &rule out venous thromboembolism, malignancy, liver disease& serious infection. Follow-up with your MD for repeat levels& if still high, consult a hematologist to look for coag disorder
