Depression and sadness can result in physiological weakness and loss of interest in normal activities. Be patient with your father. His primary care Dr can offer short term help in terms of sleep aids, general medical care and even a referral to a therapist, but grief and mourning take time. Try to interest your dad in taking walks with you and eating healthy meals and maintaining his meds.

Agree with Dr. Kratzberg. You father is most probably depressed. Try to engage him in activities that he used to enjoy. Get him to exercise. Any exercise will do. Be supportive. If he does not show improvement in 2-3 weeks, it would prudent to consult a doctor to see if he needs medication for depression. Wish you and your father good health!
