To have benefit from iron supplementation (FeSO4 ferrous sulfate) serum ferritin levels should be over 100. With "heavy periods" continually depleting red cells, iron supplementation is certainly justified. Ask your physician about monitoring serum ferritin levels, so that excess iron does not accumulate and cause other problems.

Iron and vitamin supplementation is warranted in a woman losing excessive amount of blood through heavy periods. Thalassemia trait is not relevant to the issue. For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. Wish you good health!
