Tooth pain from what you described may be caused by grinding/clenching, a non-vital nerve, or even a fracture. radiographs with a clinical exam and history will help isolate the problem. See an endodontist if your dentist cannot determine the issue.

Vexing. The first thing that comes to mind is fracture, which might not appear on x-ray. Can be caused by clenching, grinding, which can also cause inflammation. or death of plural tissues. Cause can be neurologic. If necessary, please see an Endodontist.
