It was first thought coronavirus might be frequently transmitted by contact with contaminated surfaces. But for nearly a year it has been known that it happens rarely if at all. It's common sense to continue to wash hands or use hand sanitizer after contacting surfaces handled by other persons (e.g., doorknobs, shopping cart handles). But there is little risk if you forget, even before 2 hours.

Surface contamination is considered a minor mode of transmission for COVID 19. Droplets and aerosolization have much more significant risk. Per WEBMD, the virus may live on stainless steel - 2 to 3 days, a # of other metals -5 days, Aluminum - 2 to 8 hrs, Copper - 4 hrs, wood - 4 days, plastic -2 to 3 days, cardboard -24 hrs & glass - up to 5 days.
