A few days a month i wake up with a very sore tongue, white patches, reddish. this has been going on for over a year now but is infrequent. it affects my taste. usually it goes away in the afternoon. what could this be?

Many possibilities, one of which is simply mouth breathing at night. Recommend evaluation by either ENT or oral surgeon to make sure the condition is not in the tongue itself
