A member asked:

My boyfriend has a thoracic (t12) compression fracture. they said it was a hairline. he also has some swelling in his abdomen. is this common?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Compression fracture: During the acute occurrence of a compression fracture of a vertebra, it is very common to have abdominal distension as the severe pain often stops normal intestinal peristaltic action leading to gas buildup( paralytic ileus). However, this shouldn't persist when severe back pain lessens. If abdominal distension, especially with associated discomfort, persists, he should be examined by a physician
