I've tried nexium for my gerd symptoms before, but it caused nausea and abdominal pain... that doesn't mean that my issues aren't caused by gerd, does it?

Not necessarily: It may be related to the side effects of Nexium and you still may have GERD or GERD like symptoms. Would suggest talking to your doc to see what your options are. Details matter so keep a log of your symptoms.
