A member asked:

What are the grades or stages of steatosis ? how can you determine in which stage is someone? does ultrasound and liver emzymes indicate which stage?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Steatosis: To fully and accurately grade steatosis a liver biopsy is required. Grading from 0 to 3 depends upon the percentage of fat present in the liver cells. 0=under 5% grade 1=5-33%(mild) grade 2=34-66%(moderate) grade 3=over 66%( severe). Liver enzymes are less reliable but ultrasound also can grade steatosis as well as fibrosis quite well & this is noninvasive. A hepatologist can advise you best.
