Nitrofurantoin & UTI: Nitrofuratoin is effective against most UTIs of the lower tract, i.e. bladder infection. It is not reliable and never recommenced to treat upper tract infection. If you definitely had a kidney infection (pyelonephritis) a different antibiotic should have been used. However, pyelonephritis is unlikely if you didn't have severe flank pain and fever. Check with your doctor if in doubt.
