I had a severe ankle sprain two years ago. i went to a doctor but no x-rays were taken. it still gets painful and swollen at times depending on physical activity and i suspect with certain types of footwear.

Typical: Depending on the grade of the sprain, recovery may take weeks to months and tight follow up with Ortho and physical therapy are needed. Some patients remain with chronic symptoms and unrelated pathology may contribute. A podiatrist may help as well by recommending orthotics and/or fitted shoes.

Sprain ankle: I recommend- to consult your doctor-he may advise you to try " RICE" method to ease the inflammation.1.Rest.2.Ice.3.compression ( wrapping ankle with elastic bandage) 4.Elevation of ankle .He may also advise anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin )or Naproxen( Aleve)-for pain if you are no allergic to these medications. X- rays and image scan like MRI ankle
