A member asked:

Hello, ive had a steel rod for close to 5 years now. just wondering if i regularly need to have it checked out and is it for life?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rods: Steel or titanium rods often stay in place for life. Inflammatory changes are usually mild. Elements from the rod may enter the bloodstream but the risk associated with these elements seems to be felt acceptable by orthopedic surgeons. I know of no studies recommending removal of rods in every case. Your orthopedic surgeon can give you the best advice about this matter.
