Basics: A one sided redness with little or no drainage can be from simple irritants that contact the fragile surfaces or a plug in a tear duct . Clear drainage can be extra tears, but drainage with any color, crusting or redness spreading to the other eye suggests an infection. It would be reasonable to call the kids doc for guidance. Some might call in drops or just see him to be sure.
