A 27-year-old female asked about a male:

5 yr old son, has fever 2 days he feels very hot. when i take for head tempt is 99.5 but he feels very hot, red cheeks, chills, talking at night. only taking tylenol when should i take him to doctor? why isnt thermometer picking the fever?

A Flu, COVID-19 test may be indicated. Rest,fluids, fever control usually is effective in reducing the symptoms. Please follow up with your Pediatrician. Watch for signs of sore throat and dehydration.

I would believe his symptoms rather than the number on the thermometer. Make sure he is drinking enough fluids so that he is urinating. At this point, I would recommend he be seen by his doctor to be examined and possibly tested for flu and COVID-19.
