A member asked:

Rx'd clindamycin 150mg once every 6 hours for a dental infection, but that means staying up pretty late for the last nighttime dose. can the last nighttime dose be taken early so i can get a full night's sleep? if so, how early?

Schedule: Sorry. It's best to take the medication exactly every 6 hours. That maintains the proper titer. Taking it too soon or too late means that the level of antibiotic in your blood stream varies and therefore is less effective. And make sure to take it until all are gone. Dental infections require actual treatment, not just pills, so follow your Dentist's treatment plan.

Follow up: You need to ask this question to the prescribing provider to see if it can be altered. Clindamycin can be dosed every 8 hours and would seem acceptable in this case. I’d rather a patient get proper sleep and take a higher dose later than taking a dose too early. As for all antibiotics, watch your stool closely for blood and call your doctor immediately if this occurs.
