With kidney damage, these chemicals build up in the blood and suppress the bone marrow, reducing production both white and red blood cells; anemia is low RBC. Two of the many chemicals raised in CKD are routinely tested as measures of kidney function: blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine.
