Kidney function: Metabolism, digestion, etc produce toxic chemicals that are cleared from the blood by the kidneys. With kidney damage, these chemicals build up in the blood and suppress the bone marrow, reducing production both white and red blood cells; anemia is low RBC. Two of the many chemicals raised in CKD are routinely tested as measures of kidney function: blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine.
