Cosmetic appearance: x-ray along with examination by a experienced clinician is best way to tell. Some people think that if it looks cosmetically okay and you can breathe through each nostril then give it some time and see if it heals on its own. The difficulty is that when you have swelling it can be hard to determine if the alignment is okay.
