A member asked:

My child has a tender swollen gland in her neck on the right side. she does have a slight runny nose and and had a mild cold about two weeks ago. is the swollen gland something to be concerned about? which medication can i give to treat it at home?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Common issue: The glands are part of the immune system that sifts through body serum removing viruses & germs. They are often felt in the neck where they are not buried in muscles or fat. They often swell while working and recede when finished over a 2-4 wk cycle. When this occurs in the neck during a sore throat it may signal treatable strep. If no pain or fever you can ignore it.
