Heart beat : As part of a physical examination, doctors are supposed to examine the heart by using our hand to palpate (feel) for the heartbeat. It normally is felt. When the location or amplitude of the beat is abnormal, this information can be helpful to understand the patient's condition.

Depends on details: Many adults sitting quietly can put a hand on the heart and not feel it beating. It depends on how strongly the heart is beating, how thick the chestwall is, how perceptive one's hand is, etc... Children have active hearts and thinner chestwalls so their heartbeats are more easily felt. When excited, scared, or doing physical activities, the average-sized adult may feel his heartbeat with a hand.
